Clubs

Central High School offers a wide range of clubs and organizations that give students the chance to explore interests, develop leadership skills, and build connections with peers. From academic teams and service organizations to special-interest groups and honor societies, there’s a place for every student to get involved.

Participation in clubs encourages teamwork, responsibility, and school spirit while helping students make the most of their high school experience. Whether pursuing a passion or trying something new, students are encouraged to find a group that inspires them and get involved.

Academic Team (A-Team)

The Academic Team practice to compete in regional and online trivia competitions. Some competitions focus on specific material like Tennessee Science Bowl, while others are more general knowledge like PBS Scholars' Bowl and East Tennessee Quiz Bowl tournaments. In our weekly meetings we read trivia questions and practice the various styles of the competitions to prepare for Saturday competitions.

Meetings are held weekly on Tuesdays directly after school until 4:45pm in Room 114.

Environmental Club

The Environmental Club welcomes any CHS student who has passed at least one science class. The purposes of the club include raising environmental awareness among students, beautification of the campus, and engaging in service to the community.

Some of the activities we engage in are citizen science projects, including Monarch butterfly rearing and conservation, native plant and pollinator inventory and establishment, and construction of ecosystem aquariums around school. We also host community cleanup events on campus and around the Fountain City Pond.

Club meetings are on Thursday from 3:30 to 4:15 in Room 207.

Ambassadors

The Ambassadors program is an incredible opportunity for involved students to positively represent CHS! Through school tours, leadership development, and communication training, students hone their public speaking skills and ultimately their confidence.

The Ambassadors meet monthly during the Flex period. Events and some meetings might be held before or after school.

Ceramics Club

Students that have a high interest in ceramic hand building and wheel throwing are encouraged to join Ceramics Club after passing Art 1. Students in Ceramics Club explore designing and making their own pieces. This year, students are working on creating pieces to sell at the Bobcat Bash in the spring.

Ceramics Club meets every Thursday after school from 3:30-4:30pm.

FCCLA

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national student organization that helps young people become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues. Through participation in FCCLA, students develop skills for life such as character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, and career preparation. Members have opportunities to compete in events, attend leadership conferences, and make a positive impact in their schools and communities.

Central's FCCLA participates in many activities including Chalk Talk- Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention, Pumpkin decorating and Breast Cancer Awareness in October, Turkey "Thanksgiving" Bags to Homeless and the Fall Leadership Conference in November, Christmas Ornaments & Cookie Decorating in December, and the State Leadership Conference and Competitions in March.

Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA)

Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) is a student led organization that allows students to develop various skill competencies through the health science education program. Our mission is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students, therefore, helping the student meet the needs of the health care community.

Model UN

Model United Nations simulates the workings of the United Nations, where students represent different countries to debate and negotiate solutions to global issues. Members will research countries and international topics, participate in mock UN conferences where they draft resolutions and deliver speeches, and develop skills in diplomacy, public speaking, and collaborative problem-solving. Through these activities, students gain a deeper understanding of international relations, current world affairs, and diverse global perspectives.

The group meets every Friday from 7:30 to 8:15am in room 120

National Art Honor Society

The National Art Honor Society inspires students to develop their skills as artists and leaders while promoting visual arts at Central High School.

Requirements: Students must keep a B average overall and in any art classes (freshmen: we look at 8th grade average). You don’t have to be in an art class to join n NAHS.

Club dues: $30 dues for national club fees, a t-shirt, art materials, and honor chords for seniors. Club dues can be paid all at once or divided into 5 payments ($5 in Aug. and $5 each quarter)

Service Hours: Members must earn 15 “service hours” a year. You earn service hours at meetings, club events, and for art made at home for a club project. You do not have to attend all meetings or events, as long as you get at least15 hours.

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is a service and leadership organization made up of academically high-performing junior and senior students. Students are invited for membership in the spring of their sophomore year based on their unweighted GPA.

Membership Expectations:

Membership in the local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a faculty council and is based on outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The selection process is by application held in the Spring of each year. Sophomores and Juniors with a 3.5 GPA may apply.
All members must maintain the high standards of National Honor Society by remaining active in organizations and demonstrating positive leadership in all aspects of student life.
Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month during Study Hall.
Students are expected to complete 15 service hours each school year.

National Technical Honors Society (NTHS)

National Technical Honors Society engages in tech related support during school and after school. From setting up the auditorium to after school events such as movie night and Bobcat Bash. Last year, NTHS entered the Skills USA Computer build competition in the fall at the TN Valley Fair. Meeting times are primarily during school, but sometimes will be held after school. An induction ceremony is held in the spring for new members.

Navy JROTC

The overall mission of the Navy JROTC is to instill United States students enrolled in secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

The Program Goals are to:

Promote patriotism,
Develop informed and responsible citizens,
Promote habits of orderliness and precision,
Develop a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, self-discipline, and leadership,
Promote an understanding of the basic elements and need for national security,
Develop respect for and an understanding of the need for constituted authority in a democratic society,
Provide incentives to live healthy and drug free lives,
Develop leadership potential,
Promotes high school completion,
Provide information on military services as a possible career.

We complete these goals by providing a welcoming environment for all students first and foremost. We also have special teams that students can be involved in like drill color guard, air rifle, drone, athletic, orienteering, and academic teams. We also go on field trips each year to provide an understanding of military history and give students the opportunity to visit new and exciting places.

Student Government

Student government aims to give students a leadership role within the building by providing students with opportunities to create special events for the student body. These students act as a liaison between the student body and administration and work to create/fund various incentives for the school. Students plan homecoming, movie nights, winter formal, and various leadership summits to connect with feeder schools.

The group meets every other Tuesday right after school in room 218.

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club celebrates Hispanic and Latin American culture through fun and engaging activities. Members can expect to enjoy cooking traditional foods, watching Spanish-language films, playing cultural games, and learning Latin dances.

Spanish Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month during advisory time.
